What is BarCamp about?

BarCamp is a social event where users generate their own contents for the conference. It is more like web2.0 in real life.

How did BarCamp came about?

The name “BarCamp” is a playful allusion to the event’s origins, with reference to the hacker slang term, foobar: BarCamp arose as a spin-off of Foo Camp, an annual invitation-only participant driven conference hosted by open source publishing luminary Tim O’Reilly. Unlike the invitation-only Foo Camp, BarCamp is Free for anyone to participate and contribute.

Where was the first BarCamp ever?

The first ever BarCamp was organized less than a week in Socialtext’s office in Palo Alto on the 19th to 21st August 2005. It attracted over 200 barcampers.

How does BarCamp get organized?

BarCamp is organized by volunteers which harness the power of collaborative web2.0 site like Wikis and Groups. It is because everyone contributes one way or another, the process gains so much momentum.

Who should come to BarCamp?

Everyone and anyone really, but there are some usual suspects, ie Bloggers, Techies, Entrepreneurs and Creative industry people. If you looking to mingle with people who are really in the cutting edge of their field, BarCamp is the place to be.

Do I have to sleep over?

No, camping is not officially on the agenda although if you decide to camp over please bring your sleeping bags.

Do I have to bring my own sustenance?

Not really, our wonderful volunteers are looking for sponsors to feed the barcampers at breakfast and lunch. However, dinner wont be provided so we all go out to Makan. Please bring your own bottles of water.

Do I have to pay?

BarCamp Malaysia is a free event. Our teams are working hard to gather enough funds to cover the cost as this is a not for profit event.

Who owns barcamp?

Nobody and Everybody, BarCamp is open for all.

What is this werewolf thing I been hearing a lot about?

Don’t worry about it. The werewolves only come out at night. During the day they are just harmless villagers.

What and who will be speaking at BarCamp?

Any of the participant can suggest a topic they would like to speak and the volunteers will slot them in accordingly. The topic? Anything under the sun really.
